Carnegie Technologies and Semtech Corporation announced earlier this month at Mobile World Congress Americas they are working together on LoRa solutions as part of Carnegie’s launch of their Longview Internet of Things solution.
Carnegie Technologies, based in Austin, Texas, has long been known for investing in innovation for high growth markets.
Founded in 2010 following a successful 20-year history operating wireless networks and developing adjunct communications products, Carnegie Technologies eight years later is an interesting combination of strategy, research, innovation, lab, development and business model disruption, and with the introduction of Longview is now driving momentum in the IoT and Industrial IoT (IIoT) markets.
With engineering teams on four continents, the company, which is the brainchild of mobile business pioneer Paul Posner, selected Semtech’s LoRa offering to accelerate their advance into the world of hyperconnected things, moving out from their expertise in the cellular core to next generation technologies out to the extreme edge.
According to the companies’ announcement, “Longview is a comprehensive combination of custom-engineered sensors and gateways combined with industry-specific cloud analytics and applications that come pre-configured to work right out of the box, so businesses can track, measure and manage the things that matter most. Longview is the most secure, reliable, and easy to use IoT solution in the marketplace today. Built with Semtech’s LoRa Technology, the solution has the range and power efficiency that makes it an ideal product set for deployments of any size and scope.”
Brad Bush, who came to Carnegie after executive roles in some of the largest and most disruptive businesses in telecom and technology to lead IoT efforts for Carnegie said, “Longview is a game-changer for enterprises who, with our comprehensive IoT solution, no longer have to hassle with cobbling together systems and platforms from multiple vendors.”
“We picked Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol as the best low power wide area network (LPWAN) technology in the market today,” he continued.
The solution uses the open standard LoRaWAN™ protocol as well as Carnegie’s patented Super-B protocol that increases efficiency, lowers packet loss, and allows for over-the-air (OTA) upgrades. Longview incorporates Semtech’s LoRa Technology in its sensor and gateway designs to provide long range and extended battery life.
Super-B works by using a synchronized time slot to schedule the LoRa packets between the gateways and the sensors. By scheduling packets, you can get greater than 4x the capacity and eliminate many collisions. This is extremely beneficial in noisy public spectrum that LPWAN typically runs over.
“Longview is changing the way IoT is being deployed by making it faster and easier to buy, set up, and maintain,” said Vivek Mohan, director of IoT for Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “Since Semtech’s LoRa Technology is a proven platform, Carnegie selected the IoT solution for its key capabilities including simplicity, flexibility, and easy to deploy. LoRa enables the next generation of customer service solutions.”
Semtech’s LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology is a widely adopted long-range, low-power solution for IoT that gives telecom companies, IoT application makers and system integrators the feature set necessary to deploy low-cost, interoperable IoT networks, gateways, sensors, module products, and IoT services worldwide.
IoT networks based on the LoRaWAN specification have been deployed in over 100 countries. Semtech is a founding member and Carnegie Technologies is a contributing member of the LoRa Alliance, the fastest growing IoT Alliance for Low Power Wide Area Network applications with over 500 members.
