Rugged IIoT Environments, Handled: Soracom's Industrial-Grade SIM Card

By Alex Passett
March 28, 2023

Global provider of advanced IoT connectivity Soracom announced an industrial-grade SIM card for its portfolio of eSIM and IoT SIM solutions.

This is important for several reasons:

  • With this addition to Soracom’s offerings, the company can now offer standard and industrial-grade eSIMs, SIM cards, and iSIM capability. Industrial-grade SIM cards – essentially destined for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) – are made with rugged, harsher environments and case-specific conditions in mind. When considering extreme temperatures, high moisture or dust levels, or areas with significant levels of shocks or vibrations, standard SIMs could be at major risk and might not make the cut. The Soracom Industrial SIM, on the other hand, would function as anticipated; this means it’s an excellent choice for M2M/IoT applications where a deeper need for durability outweighs other SIM-related benefits.
  • The Soracom Industrial SIM is fully compatible with current GSMA M2M eUICC specifications.
  • The Industrial SIM provides pay-per-use cellular data (i.e. including 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE and Cat-M1 coverage, where available) in more than 160 countries in total.
  • The inclusion of iSIM capability will allow devices to be remotely provisioned and managed. This can also help reduce TCO by simplifying processes.
  • Once the Industrial SIM has been acquired, access to Soracom’s connectivity management platform/API is included at no additional cost. (Plus, a library of cloud-native platform services designed to accelerate IoT deployment for real, measurable successes at scale.)

Commenting on this announcement are Nathan Hoel, CTO of agricultural IoT company BinSentry (that allows feed mills and livestock producers to more accurately monitor on-farm inventory and consumption trends), as well as Soracom’s own co-founder and CTO, Kenta Yasukawa.

“Feed manufacturers across North America trust BinSentry to monitor thousands of feed bins, automate inventory and improve decision-making," said Hoel. “In the rugged types of environments where our gear faces rapid temperature change, vibrations and dust, we’ve tried many IoT SIM cards that haven’t been satisfactory. The Industrial SIM from Soracom, however, delivers a connection we can count on, and Soracom's smart lifecycle management allows us to optimize our network for performance and cost."

A rugged environment? Check. A very case-specific condition where the Industrial SIM will succeed? Check.

“Every day, we help customers around the world and across industries offload heavy lifting to the cloud on terms that make sense for IoT," said Yasukawa. "An industrial-grade SIM card with eUICC capabilities complements our industrial IoT eSIM offerings and lets our customers deploy connected solutions in challenging environments, ensuring optimal form factors and maximum durability tailored to their use cases."
